The Last Wildboy

The Last Wildboy

This is a new young adult novel by P.E.I.’s Poet Laureate. It is a dystopic story about Nora who lives in the walled city of Aahimsa, anidyllic community of girls and women working together to make a peaceful life free of the brutality of the outsiders. As the companionof the mayor of Aahimsa’s daughter, Alice, she enjoys privileges that other women from the working class can only dream of.But when she and Alice find an outsider baby abandoned within the city walls, Nora starts to question whether the outsiders poseas much of a threat to her civilization as she’s been taught. With the baby’s life in danger, Nora must decide whether she’s willingto give up everything she has to save him, and who she can trust to help her.

The Last Wildboy

This book is about Nora and the events that take place around her. This book introduces a concept totally new to me. It is the concept of insiders and outsiders. The insiders have privileges that the outsiders can't even think of. The outsiders are portrayed as aliens and killers to the insiders. But when Nora and her friend Alice find an outsider baby in the city, they start questioning what they had been taught about outsiders. But I think this concept also applies to our lives. In the world, their are many places where a certain group of people are portrayed as such. When a person investigates the things that he had been told about those people, only then he realizes the truth and agrees that we are all human beings with equal rights.
This book made me aware of a lot of problems in real life, but namely the issue mentioned above.
I rate this book star ⭐⭐⭐⭐.

I recommend this book.

The Last Wildboy

Plot: “The Last wild Boy” is an interesting spin on the Y.A dystopian fiction novel. It follows main protagonist Nora, who lives in a city made up of entirely women. One day she discovers a baby boy and has to decide whether she should hand him over to authorities, or risk everything she has to save him. It is an interesting concept, however, I felt as though things moved too quickly. The author does a great job setting up a mystery, only to have it solved in the next chapter. Also, there were some themes in the book that seemed at points questionable. I’m sure this was not intentional, and just needed a bit more fleshing out.I feel as though this story could benefit from higher stakes.

Characters: The Characters themselves were fine. I enjoyed Nora’s resilience. I was left a little confused about some of the relationships between characters. Nora is said to be a companion of Alice, the mayor’s daughter. I felt as though the author could have been a bit more clear in defining their relationship. Alice herself is a character I felt deserved more attention. Overall, the characters were good.

World building: To be completely honest, this world left me with a lot of questions. The concept itself is fascinating. A society of all women is a really interesting idea. However, most of the story takes place outside of the city. The main protagonist doesn’t really have a lot of time to reflect on the impact that the society has had on her, as she spends most of the book moving from location to location. If more time was spent fleshing out the world, the story would benefit.

Overall, this was an interesting reading experience. It definitely left an impression on me, in more ways than one. I will say that it was lovely to read a book written by someone from my home province. I wish Mr. MacDonald all the best in his next writing endeavour.

I recommend this book.
