Plot: “The Last wild Boy” is an interesting spin on the Y.A dystopian fiction novel. It follows main protagonist Nora, who lives in a city made up of entirely women. One day she discovers a baby boy and has to decide whether she should hand him over to authorities, or risk everything she has to save him. It is an interesting concept, however, I felt as though things moved too quickly. The author does a great job setting up a mystery, only to have it solved in the next chapter. Also, there were some themes in the book that seemed at points questionable. I’m sure this was not intentional, and just needed a bit more fleshing out.I feel as though this story could benefit from higher stakes.
Characters: The Characters themselves were fine. I enjoyed Nora’s resilience. I was left a little confused about some of the relationships between characters. Nora is said to be a companion of Alice, the mayor’s daughter. I felt as though the author could have been a bit more clear in defining their relationship. Alice herself is a character I felt deserved more attention. Overall, the characters were good.
World building: To be completely honest, this world left me with a lot of questions. The concept itself is fascinating. A society of all women is a really interesting idea. However, most of the story takes place outside of the city. The main protagonist doesn’t really have a lot of time to reflect on the impact that the society has had on her, as she spends most of the book moving from location to location. If more time was spent fleshing out the world, the story would benefit.
Overall, this was an interesting reading experience. It definitely left an impression on me, in more ways than one. I will say that it was lovely to read a book written by someone from my home province. I wish Mr. MacDonald all the best in his next writing endeavour.
