Dirty Birds

Dirty Birds

In late 2007, as the world’s economy crumbles, the remarkably unremarkable Milton Ontario—not to be confused with Milton, Ontario—leaves his parent’s basement in Saskatchewan and sets forth to find fame, fortune, and love in the electric sexuality of Montreal, to bask in endless Millennial

adolescence, to escape the infinite flatness of Saskatchewan, and to find his messiah: Leonard Cohen.

Hilariously ironic and irreverent, Dirty Birds is a quest novel for the twenty-first century—a coming-of-age, rom-com, crime-farce thriller—where a hero’s greatest foe is his own crippling mediocrity, and getting out of bed before noon.

Dirty Birds

Dirty Birds by Morgan Murray is a wonderfully witty novel. The strength and clarity of the narrator's voice and humour were instrumental in my enjoyment of the book as without that framing I would have found it a bit difficult to follow Milton Ontario along his journey of misadventures. The book is very honest in its portrayal of just how weird and messy people are, which I appreciated. I liked how long and winding it could be, taking the time to paint detailed pictures of people's lives and the places surrounding them. The illustrations throughout really added to the reading experience and I was grateful for all of the footnotes.

If you're looking for a funny, very Canadian read then I'd easily recommend Dirty Birds.

I recommend this book.
