This powerful autobiography is a great read for anyone, regardless if you play basketball. The book covers Eric’s incredible journey from being a child counting his father's drug money to defeating the odds and achieving his dream of playing in the National Basketball League of Canada.
This was a long-anticipated read for me, and it didn’t disappoint. Eric is very inspirational and has overcome many adversities throughout his life. Although there were instances where I thought he came off quite arrogant at times, he’s very self-aware and recognizes that’s wrong. The book had wonderful morals otherwise, such as protecting sibling bond and having faith. The reader can genuinely sense the love and care he has for his younger sister, Shirley, through his words. As a child, Eric found himself protecting his little sister, and I loved how that didn’t stop even when they were older and in a much safer environment.
This book had less than 150 pages, and I really wished it could have been longer, as it covers the majority of his life in very few chapters. I thought that some periods of his lifespan and many of the anecdotes were rushed. I would’ve loved to know more details. However, every sentence was authentic and, as both a basketball and autobiography lover, I already agreed with the title. This book was very engaging and left the reader with a great message of having the strength to turn your life around through your passion.
I recommend this book to readers looking for an honest and uplifting read.
