OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS
Funded through the Canada Council for arts, Digitally Lit Atlantic Canadian Youth Read is guided by a Steering Committee composed of Publishers representing each Atlantic Canadian Province:
THE ACORN PRESS was founded in 1994 by editor, poet, and publisher Laurie Brinklow, as the fulfillment of her long-standing dream to have her own publishing company. The Acorn Press is based in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada.
Prince Edward Island, though Canada’s smallest province, has produced some of Canada’s most important literature, including the novels of L. M. Montgomery (including the children’s classic Anne of Green Gables) and the poetry of Canada’s People’s Poet, Milton Acorn.
Works published by the Acorn Press continue the PEI tradition of literature with local interest and global appeal. The Acorn Press takes as its particular goal and mandate to help encourage the flourishing literary culture of Prince Edward Island by publishing “Books about Prince Edward Island by Prince Edward Islanders.” The Acorn Press combines high editorial standards with excellent local design and printing to craft fine books of poetry, fiction, history, folklore, and literature for children.
BREAKWATER BOOKS was established in 1973, Breakwater Books was founded on the principle of preserving the unique culture and stories of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Maritime provinces.
Since that time, Breakwater has developed into a high-quality trade publisher, releasing eighteen to twenty titles a year – including children’s picture books, young adult fiction, literary and commercial fiction, non-fiction, poetry, cookbooks, drama, and art books – while continuing to support its culturally significant backlist titles.
Breakwater takes pride in fostering the careers of emerging and established writers alike. Many authors and titles maintain strong links to Newfoundland and Labrador and the North Atlantic, while other Breakwater authors hail from all parts of Canada. A burgeoning translation and foreign rights program makes Breakwater’s list of both national and international interest.
GOOSE LANE EDITIONS is Canada's oldest independent publisher. For more than 60 years, we’ve believed in the power of words to inspire, to change, to enlighten. We believe that the pen can be more powerful than the sword and that ideas writ large are the most important resource on this small planet. We believe that stories both show who we are and who we might become — one word at a time.
Plunge into our catalogue, a treasury of human thought. Feed your soul with our novels, stories, poems. Let your mind wander through our books on history and travel, on nature and humanity, on human ingenuity and creativity. Feast your eyes on the works that have the power to inspire and to provoke. Immerse yourself in ideas new and old that have the power to change the course of history.
Sixty years after a group of curious idealists began this little company — to spread the word — we’re still here, still curious, still feeding the minds of readers, still making the word public — one book at at time.

Nimbus publishes the best books on Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland.
Nimbus also does distribution for numerous Atlantic publishers, making the company the biggest book distributor on the east coast of Canada. For a list of distributed publishers, go here.
